Chapter eight

We’re almost to my parent’s house when the snow starts to come down wicked heavy. I slow down as Opal holds onto the seat.

“Hey, look at me.” Opal slowly turns her head. “We’re gonna be fine. I know you’re nervous driving in the snow, but we got this. Okay?”

“Promise?”

I nod as I turn back to the road, taking her hand in mine. “Of course.”

Turning the radio up, I sing along to the songs, knowing it will get Opal’s mind off the snowy road ahead of us.

We finally pass the sign for Glissvale, my hometown. “Almost there, sunshine.”

Driving through town, the shops are dark, the sidewalks are empty, and there isn’t a soul on the road—all signs pointing to a terrible snowstorm.

I turn right and drive up a long driveway, parking in front of my family’s old farmhouse. My family comes rushing out, grabbing the bags before I even have the SUV turned off. Opal and I grab the last few and scurry inside as the wind whips a wall of snow toward us.

Standing in the mudroom, we stomp our boots and hang coats up. My mother pulls us both into a hug. “I was so worried! This is going to be a dreadful storm. I can feel it! Is your girlfriend coming separately, Nix?”

My youngest sister, Viv, rolls her eyes. “Great. Another groupie for Christmas. Can she at least wear clothes this time, Nix?”

My brother, Nik, rolls his eyes as he chuckles. “Don’t worry, Shannon will be here soon.”

Val, my other younger sister, giggles. “Or maybe she’s just fake to get Mom off Nixon’s back.”

Nik sighs. “Shannon will be here, and we can all go back to normal. Chill.”

“Can you all shut the fuck up? Jesus Christ.” I turn and see Opal visibly uncomfortable. Taking her hand in mine, I bring her knuckles to my lips, softly kissing them.

Viv gasps. “Oh. My. God. No effing way, Nix!”

My mother turns and shakes her head. “Nixon Vander Hellqvist! Don’t you dare tease me like this!”

“If you guys ever let me get a single word in, yes. Opal is here with me because she is my girlfriend.”

My mom and sister hurry over to her, hugging her as my dad comes out.

He playfully slaps me on the back. “So, when’s the stripper girlfriend getting here? Heard you got a new one.”

Mom glares at him. “It’s Opal.”

“What?!”

I nod as my dad turns to me in shock. “Opal? Our little Opal? About damn time! Let’s get inside!”

We all hustle into the house, dropping the bags at the bottom of the stairs as my mom ushers us into the living room. Tables are set up with Chinese food in the dining room. Mom hands us plates and we fill them up, heading to grab a spot in the living room.

I sit next to Opal, throwing my arm over her shoulder while Val hands her a drink. We all sit and eat, refilling our glasses as the snow falls outside.

Val and Viv sit across from Opal and me, their eyes glued to the two of us.
